Novice & Special Puppy Working Test
Buckhurst Estate, Withyham, East Sussex
by kind permission of The Earl and Countess De La Warr
Sunday 25th April 2010
Judges: Tony Russell, Bryan Kent, Wendy Harrison
and Diana Stevens

14 puppies and 24 novice dogs gathered on a day of indeterminate
weather at the shooting hut on the glorious Buckhurst Estate. Six
tests had been set, the same for both classes but with shorter
distances for the puppies.

Test 1 – A mark with shot over a wetland scenario. Shallow water
with lots of reeds and hummocks of vegetation to negotiate proved
a good test of the dogs’ bravery.

Test 2 – A blind in dense cover beside a lake. The water was a
great temptation for the dogs.

Test 3 – A double, a blind over a ditch in a dark wood and a mark
with shot across open ground sloping away. Some of the younger
dogs marked this short but a majority achieved.

Test 4 – 2 blinds into a wood, with a field to the left. Some of the
younger dogs pulled towards the field but most achieved eventually.

Test 5 – A two dog walk-up, the ground was deceptive, sloping
away and to the left, which meant the dogs were out of sight when
picking the dummy.

Test 6 – Two marks, one behind the other, with shot in an open
field, the closer to be picked first. An interesting test, not as easy
as it appeared.

The glorious Buckhurst Estate

Once again the organisation was amazing and huge thanks go to
all those involved. A very special thank you to Andy Sayers, the
Keeper, and to Ben his Under Keeper, both of whom were very
generous with their time and assistance.

A very special thank you goes to The Earl and Countess De La Warr
for allowing us to use their splendid Estate and to our sponsors
Roger Skinners Pet Food.

Novice & Open Working Tests with Water
Gardeners Farm, Ashburnham, East Sussex
by kind permission of Mr Andrew Ward-Smith
Sunday 27th June 2010
Judges: John Barnes, Liz Barnes, Roger Wade, Bryan Kent,
Gary Vidler and Jo Hawkesworth

It was an absolutely scorching day, far too hot for dogs to be left
in vehicles, almost too hot to run. The ground was rock hard and
cracked and the scent was elusive.

Five tests were set – the first judged by Liz Barnes was a seemingly
simple blind down a track. The bunkers were there though; a field
of beans to the left and a small stile on the right at the start of the
track. Inevitably some had to employ their sand wedges!!

John Barnes judged test 2 a blind with shot on a promontory and
a mark with shot in grass at the side of the field the blind to be
picked first. Running round was possible but traps (dummies on the
path) were out for those who did.

Test 3 was judged by Bryan Kent and Jo Hawksworth, a blind
across a lake with shot with the added distraction of a huge lily pad.

Test 4 was a two dog walk-up, judged by Gary Vidler. The grass
and reeds were dog high and each dog had two retrieves a blind
and a mark with shot. The long grass gave the dogs some respite
from the sun, but the smaller ones could not be seen and ‘trust
your dog’
was the order of the day.

The final test, number 5, was a double on a lake with geese!
Judged by Roger Wade, the first was a mark over the lake up a
long bank in the rough grass at the edge of the track. The second
was a blind with shot across an inlet, but the dogs could run round,
which a majority chose to do.

The day ran through and all the tests were completed by 2.30pm.
It was a relief to return to the cars, the shade and Ben Van
Praagh’s tea and cakes. Both classes had runs off, and the results
were announced by 3.15pm.

Our thanks go to Andy Ward-Smith for the use of his lovely and
interesting ground; to all the judges and our amazing helpers and
to Julia Smith and Sarah Baldock for the organisation, they did a
sterling job. It was Sarah’s first ‘test’ of organising this type of
event and it was as if she had been doing it all her life.
Appreciation also goes to our sponsors Roger Skinners Pet Food.
