Let
me know what
do you think? With
the sole aim of attempting to involve our Spaniel members in
more of
our established events such as the Area Working Test
Finals, the Utility
Gundog Society decided to run a trial Working
Test where spaniels were
involved, during the summer of 2010.
The spaniel handlers who took part were specifically asked to assist
the Society in this way and as Chairman of the Society I am
extremely
grateful to them.
Following this event a variety of messages were fed back to the
General
Committee about the success or otherwise of the scheme.
Some concern
was expressed that the timing of the Area Working
Test Finals, often
in mid to late summer, was not a good time for
the spaniels themselves.
In order to move this debate forward I have been asked to place
this
notice on the Society website with a view to soliciting more
views from
both Spaniel members and Retriever members as to the
viability of such
an event.
The General Committee would seek to make a final decision in
relation
to this issue at our meeting in April.
May I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and responding. Graham

 Annual
Bursary to be awarded to
Young Handlers The Kent
and East Sussex Branch of the Utility Gundog Society
has
raised funds to award an annual Bursary to young handlers,
who show the potential to go further in the sport. The
award will be
decided by the judges at the ‘Fun
Day’ and will take into account
handling ability, empathy with dogs and general demeanour.
The Bursary will consist of three half day training sessions with
a
well known gundog trainer and the opportunity to spend a day,
under instruction, with their dog, on a shoot.
The trainer, Gilly Nickols, is based in East Sussex, with 350 acres
of woodland, lakes and valleys on which she trains her dogs. She
has made up two Field Trial Champions, Tasco Rouble of Bedgebrook
and Bedgebrook Excalibur. She teaches and Judges both in the UK
and Europe, is a Kennel Club ‘B’ Panel Judge and
judges both Field
Trials and Working Tests.
Gilly is passionate about training her dogs and helping other people
to train theirs. She is keen to encourage young handlers and
believes that a good grounding in dog training and the etiquette
of
the shooting and trialling worlds is essential to produce good
all
round handlers. She is a very friendly approachable trainer, always
wanting the dog and the handler to succeed; she is aware of all
the pitfalls and will break down any problematic tasks to enable
the
best result – www.bedgebrookgundogs.co.uk
