The spaniels had a difficult season hit with both bad weather and
some bad press.

The quality of the dogs being trialled this year proved that
although we have had some difficult times the breeders are still
getting it right and, after all, we are here just as custodians of the
breed and I see working Cockers and Springers going from strength
to strength with each season.

Thank you to all those who have helped out at the Trials this
season as it definitely makes my life easier on the day. I must also
extend my sincere gratitude to those who shot for the UGS Spaniel
Trials this season. Without their support and generosity it would be
almost impossible to follow our sport. Thank you to each and
everyone of you.

Open Qualifying Springer Spaniel Stake
at Ampton, Suffolk
Thursday 2nd December 2010

Unfortunately our Open Springer Stake was a casualty of the
weather. It is always very difficult and time consuming to cancel a
trial and a decision had to be made and it turned out once again to
be the right one with weather not seen for a generation.

We did desperately try to reschedule but Christmas, the weather
and the deadline for Open Stakes beat us so I can only apologise
to all those competitors who supported us and hope the weather
is kinder to us next year.

Open Qualifying Cocker Spaniel Stake
at Brockett Park
Monday 13th December 2010
Judges: Mr J. Cook and Mr M. Leflay

I had heard about the Estate but nothing can prepare you for the
miles of bracken bottomed woodland which stretches to the
horizon. The Spaniel Championships were held here in the 1980’s
and it had lost none of its’ “Perfect Spaniel Ground Status” which
wasn’t lost on the top field of handlers on the day’s card.

The Maesydderwen dogs again showed the field how it was done
and they really were on fire. This line constantly shows their
stylish hunting and took three of the top four places.

The woodcock showed in abundance and sat tight for some
fantastic off the nose flushes with a spectacular double flush
leaving one of the Guns cursing his first opportunity to gain entry
into the exclusive woodcock club when his second barrel failed to
connect with the second bird.

I felt privileged to watch the dogs in this spectacular scenery and
when Chris Linney’s Mallowdale Ken of Winhocklin came into line
its’ pace and game finding truly impressed. When a wing tipped
cock glided 100 yards down the wood and then ran I knew it would
take a special dog to take the retrieve and it did! It was without
doubt the best spaniel retrieve I have seen and a credit to the
dog. Unfortunately a small error on the other side meant he only
took a ticket but it certainly showed what these little dogs are capable of.

We are lucky enough to have this venue again this year and it is
definitely a good ground for spectators so come along this year if
you get a chance.

Novice Cocker Spaniel Stake
at Orsett, Essex
Wednesday 5th January 2011
Judges: Mr T. Baker and Mr S. Parker

The card looked liked the Championships with all the top handlers
coming to Essex for this Trial.

Mark Polley and his team had again prepared the ground well with
the dogs finding so much game you could have thought it was the
first month of the season, not the last! The guns took a little
longer to find their form which gave Robin Laud’s bitch six contact
flushes before his retrieve. The standard was exceptional with ten
awards in this sixteen dog stake.

Woodcock dropping in the plough dropped a number of top dogs
down the order. A top contender, Mallowdale Music, went out
after failing to make the fall on a woodcock shot out of bramble.
Simon Tyers hard hunting bitch hunted the stick piles with a
vengeance before a nice find on a cock shot out on the plough
putting him into a run off with Robin Laud. Robin and Simon took
their bitches into the laid cover crop and it was a difficult decision
to split them but Simon came out on top.

Novice AV Spaniel Stake
at Cuffley, Hertfordshire
Wednesday 26th January 2011
Judges: Mr R. Chapple and Mr F. Geraghty

A mixture of Cocker’s and Springer’s concluded our Spaniel Trials
this year with the bramble and short game supply sorting out the
fit dogs! The dogs had to work very hard for their flushes and a number of dogs had one blank run.

One of these dogs which went out with a blank first run after two
lovely finds and flushes on rabbits was Mr B. Wade’s Shallowoak
West Ellie. This Springer bitch could not fail to impress with its
snake like action through the bramble and when later it was called
in for a spare bird retrieve, you had to know it was in with a shout.

Chris Linney had put an extra dog in at short notice and less than
a year old it shows how quickly these dogs pick up their trade. It
came in third but is definitely one to watch for next year. Peter
Avery showed that his new bionic body parts were in perfect
working order when he set off after his dog knowing the birds were
running on. We eventually caught up with a hen at a fallen tree
and a nice flush and retrieve put Peter in the run off and Rod and I
catching our breath!

The run off in the same bramble saw it swing one way and then
the other. Peter’s bitch in front after a nice find only to be
overtaken by Brian’s hard hunting bitch when Peter’s stalled on
some scent.

We were lucky enough to have the services of a freelance
photographer for the day and images can be seen at
