Open
Qualifying Springer Spaniel Stake
Wretton Shoot, Norfolk
by kind permission Mr Peter Rushbrook
Tuesday 3rd November 2009 We
had heard about a new shoot that had been taken over by
Peter Rushbrook
at Wretton. The fields which had been
uncultivated for many years
looked ideal for spaniels and other
societies seemed equally impressed
as a number of bookings went
in for early season trials.
Early reports however were not good and an Open Stake a few
days before
ours managed only seventeen birds, so naturally I was
cautious. However,
after the initial teething problems with this
fantastic spaniel ground,
Judges Paul Rawlings and Guy Stubbings
had some sorting out to do with
fifty birds shot over some excellent
dogs.
The rain was torrential and Mark Polley’s team of guns shot
superbly,
as they did last year, in this very demanding weather. A
fine performance
saw Mr Bailey’s dog take the trial on ice and with
a win the
previous month made the dog up. 1st – Mr
J. Bailey with Countryways Judy of Sliabh
2nd – Mr P. Avery with Deepfleet Yew Buster
3rd – Mr R. Loomes with Melchbourne Melle
4th – Mr G. Devine Jones with Deniro Dream
CoM – Mr S. R. Bates with FTCh Sodburyvale

Open
Qualifying Cocker Spaniel Stake
Hargham and Quidenham Shoot, Norfolk
by kind permission Mr Philip Milburn
Thursday 17th December 2009 We
beat the weather by one day when our Open Cocker went back
to Hargham
again this year. The trial was held in big bracken
bottomed woods
which caused a problem with birds running on. The
woodcock sat tight
as always and caused the demise of a number
of dogs due to the sharp
shooting of John Keegan’s team of guns.
Judge Robin Laud working with ‘new to the panel’ Lynn Randall
however proved to have a much better marking ability than the
dogs,
walking out to pick a number of supposedly unpickable
woodcock with
just the aid of his stick.
The super breeding line of Peter Jones Maesyddewen dogs came to
the
top again taking three of the top four places. 1st – Mr
G. Beeton with Maesydderwen Sizzle
2nd – M. & P. E. Jones with Maesydderwen
Supremacy
3rd – Mr C. J. Turner with Sandlewood Sam
4th – Mr M. Wills with Maesydderwen Sublimity
CoM – Mrs L. Hudson with Timsgarry Eagle
CoM – Mr A. Creed with Jaspers Black Riddle
CoM – J. Thompson with Mynyeldmawr Sasha
CoM – Mr S. Light with Coklebelshays Rusty

Brook Farm, Cuffley, Hertfordshire
by kind permission Mr David Thomas
Wednesday 27th January 2010 The
fantastic trial ground at Cuffley welcomed us and John
Keegan’s team
of guns again this year. Unusually no cockers had
entered this year although
they have been holding their own at a
number of other Any Variety Trials
this year.
Wendy Knight and I had a difficult job separating the Trial with
some excellent
dog work and plenty of game coming to hand. A
number of excellent hunting dogs
left the Trial with nothing, due to
sloppy retrieving and poor handling on blind
retrieves – something
a little work in the summer will definitely see these
dogs winning
Novice Trials next year.
Mr Makepeace won on ice with an excellent display of hard hunting
with little
whistle and natural game finding – you didn’t need to tell
this dog
where to hunt! 1st – Mr
P. Makepeace with Eva Von Diesel
2nd – Mr R. G. Chapple with Belvden Fifty Acre
3rd – Mr R. F. Button with Sunnymead Smudge
4th – Ms E. James with Shauoakwest China
CoM – Mr W. Greig with Cheweky Jewel
CoM – Mrs Hood with Druimmuir Dane of Dunhamswood

Cocker Spaniel Stake
The Orsett Shoot, Essex
by kind permission Mr Mark Polley
Thursday 28th January 2010 Our
rescheduled Cocker trial by kind permission of Mark Polley who
also
supplied the guns. As mentioned, due to the rescheduled
Cocker Championship,
we had lost a number of dogs but with a bit
of phoning around, with
even me running a very overweight puppy,
we ended up with fifteen dogs.
Plenty of rabbits, woodcock partridge, pheasant and a lone
moorhen
for our winning dog gave a nice mixed bag again this year
and our late
replacement judges of Terry Baker and Frank Geraghty
had difficulty
choosing between the top two dogs who were run off
in light bramble
to give us the overall winner.
Tony Beckett, who kindly stewarded, lost his top set of false teeth
and gave me and the farm manager a shock whilst out lamping the
following
night as a big dog fox gave us a cheesy grin before
disappearing into
the big wood! 1st – Mr
J. Chenery with Ghost Wood Tree Creeper
2nd – Mr J. D. Sowerby with Kirkstall Amethyst
also Guns’ Choice
3rd – Mr J. Keegan with Satcumo Raven from
Geordieland
4th – Mr J. F. Luxford with Kenmillix Bouncy
Boy
CoM – Mr N. Gregory with Ladecourt Quantum
CoM – Mr J. Sait with Louies Dream
