EC – Judges Training Weekend

In memory of Peter Johnson, who left us a legacy, the UGS Eastern Counties branch are running a judging weekend on the 20th and 21st August.

The Saturday will be a practical day “in the field” at Hintlesham by kind permission of Kevin Doughty and will be a “scenario” based day giving “trainees” the chance to experience “sending”, “decision making” and “assessing” a number of usual and unusual situations that may occur when judging.

The day is aimed primarily at non panel judges (but panel judges will be welcome to attend), especially those about to start their judging career. This day will be overseen by seven experienced A panel “educator” judges, Kevin Doughty, Steve Polley, Phil Askew, Sara Gadd, Mike Tallamy, Rodger Ketley and Phil Highfield.

The Sunday will be a presentation and examination of the J Regs by Kevin Doughty and will be held at Woolpit Village Hall at a cost of £30. Applicants can choose to do one or the other or both. There will be spaces for 36 trainee judges on the practical day at a reduced cost of £20. Current members of Eastern Counties Branch will have preference.

We will also need 16 dogs and handlers of a good standard (at least open WT award winners) that are able to “hunt” their dogs in a specified area. Dogs\Handlers will be free of charge but will be able to listen in on the discussions but without input.

Please contact me, by email on julia.nigel@btinternet.com if you are interested. Help on the day would be appreciated especially if you’re a good dummy thrower!!

20 Nov 2021 – S,WS&H All Age Results

Yesterday UGS S,WS&H Branch held our AA Qualifier Trial at Castle Goring, West Sussex. We had a full card, the weather was ideal for shooting, overcast and a chilly breeze.

16 dogs started and 5 finished with the ultimate drive over the lakes. All dogs were really tested over the day picking on grass, out of woods and over water. Heavy drives knocked out two or three on the first drive, but as the day went on the best dogs shone.

Many thanks to the Somerset family for allowing us to hold our trial there, the judges: Jamie Bettinson, Roger Wade, Julia Smith and Alistair House. You all did a super job.

Thanks also to our sponsors, Skinners Dog food, George Barclay Dog Beds and Nash drying coats.

My amazing team of helpers: Laura, Tracy, Alice, Faye, Ian and Pat and my mum and Bren van Laun Lesley, Anna, Pat, John, Matt, Jane, Andy and Kim. Couldn’t do this job without you all, your help and support is second to none! Also many thanks to Rosemary Saddler for her photography during the day.

1st – Elmertown if I may – Keith Townsend and guns choice
2nd – Isleofman Gorse of Wylanbriar – Di Stevens
3rd – Ticefield Dazed and Confused- Reuben Corbett
4th – Packmores Pintail- Barry Harvey
C of M – Ticefield Ramble on to Elmertown – Angie Townsend
Keith and Reuben have already qualified for the area finals, so congratulations to Di, Barry and Angie for also qualifying for the area finals in December.

13 Oct 2021 – S,WS&H Novice Stake

Yesterday UGS Surrey West Sussex and Hants branch held our Novice trial at Firle Estate by kind permission of Mr Rees and Mr Coleman. Firle’s very own character of their shoot captain Mr P Setterfield organised a fabulous team of guns headed by Mr B van den  Bogaerde who shot brilliantly in super weather.

This was a driven trial, with birds landing in stubble for the first drive and a good crop of stubble turnip for the second. The Keeper and his team did a magnificent job at putting the right amount of birds over the guns all day. It takes skill to do this, so thank you Dave!!! The beaters and picking up team were given a bottle of sloe gin each and a tub of chocolates to show our appreciation first thing in the morning.

The 16 dogs were well tested on straight lines, handling and hunting ability, and “trial over” there were 5 dogs left at the end.

1st place and Guns Choice, went to Graham Robert’s GR D Windingbrooks Autumn Kasper
2nd place Anna Mayhews Lab B Wauniago Dara handled by Jason Mayhew
3rd Barry Harvey’s Lab D Packmoors Pintail
C of M’s Keith Townsend’s Lab B Raven black Onyx to Elmertown
Charlotte Hammicks Lab B Muscatelle Calypso

Many thanks to the lovely Judges, Barbara Kuen, Diana Stevens, Sue Jordan and Alistair House. Also big thank you to all my helpers and committee for all your support. Laura Carleton, Lindsay Williams, Tracy DP Alice KirkWendy Harrison, Fay DrewryPat Geary, Victoria Rose, Jane Gray, Kate Wheatley, Jane Fenner, John Malcomson, Sue Convery, Arthur Gosdon, John Debnam. Without all your help the day would never of run so well, so sincere thanks from the bottom of my heart!!
Also our sponsors, as always, your so generous and greatly appreciated Skinners dog food, George Barclay dog beds and Nash Dog coats.
Many thanks also to Rosemary Saddler for taking photos of the day which can be found on our club website.
